Block them. Move on. I&#8217;m talking about emails, messages and even texts from people you know and work with\u2014coworkers, clients, vendors and business associates.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly, I see legitimate communication go completely unanswered. It has become so commonplace that I&#8217;m starting to wonder if we&#8217;ve decided this is acceptable business behavior.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I haven&#8217;t.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-048e22b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"048e22b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like it or not, how you communicate is part of your personal brand. Responsiveness is part of how people experience working with you.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I send you a legitimate business communication and don&#8217;t hear anything back for days\u2014or ever\u2014you&#8217;ve told me something. Maybe you didn&#8217;t intend to, but you have. You&#8217;ve told me that responding isn&#8217;t a priority and that I may need to chase you to get something done. And if you expect prompt responses when <em>you<\/em> need something from me, you&#8217;ve potentially told me something else: your time is more important than mine.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s not a great personal brand.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn&#8217;t mean everyone needs to respond immediately. In fact, I think our expectation of instant availability has created some of the problem. There is nothing wrong with protecting your time, turning off notifications or processing email at designated times during the day.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Responsive doesn&#8217;t mean immediate. It means reliable.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61a504a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"61a504a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\"I'm Overwhelmed\" Isn't a Communication Strategy<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2071c2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2071c2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand the volume problem. Most of us receive far more communication today than we did 10 or 20 years ago. Email, Teams, Slack, text messages, LinkedIn\u2014the number of ways someone can reach us keeps growing, and some people are genuinely overwhelmed by it.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But at some point, that&#8217;s a systems problem. If the volume of communication you&#8217;re receiving exceeds your ability to process it, you need a better way to manage it. Filters, folders, scheduled processing time, delegation, clearer boundaries\u2014whatever works for you.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My sixth-grade teacher had a saying that has stuck with me: <strong>Even a good excuse is still an excuse.<\/strong> Being busy may explain why you aren&#8217;t responding. It doesn&#8217;t eliminate the impact on the person waiting for you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-68d7f4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"68d7f4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Response Doesn't Have to Be an Answer<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-faa31f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"faa31f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be the easiest part to fix. You don&#8217;t always need to have the answer. Sometimes all that is required is:<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>&#8220;I got your note. I can&#8217;t give this the attention it deserves right now, but I&#8217;ll get back to you by Thursday.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s a response. Of course, now you actually have to get back to them on Thursday, which requires a system too. But you&#8217;ve acknowledged the communication, established an expectation and given the other person some certainty.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare that with silence. Did they get my email? Are they working on it? Did I offend them? Should I follow up? Should I call? Do I need to find someone else?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crickets create uncertainty, and uncertainty creates unnecessary work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c06e47e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c06e47e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Responsiveness Builds Trust<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf6e554 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf6e554\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people I most enjoy working with aren&#8217;t necessarily the people who respond fastest. They&#8217;re the people I know <strong>will <\/strong>respond. I don&#8217;t have to chase them or wonder what&#8217;s happening. If they tell me they&#8217;ll get back to me Friday, I know I&#8217;ll hear from them Friday.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s trust, and trust is built through dozens of small behaviors just like this one.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So no, you don&#8217;t have to answer every email the moment it arrives. You don&#8217;t need to be available 24\/7, and you certainly don&#8217;t need to respond to every piece of junk that finds its way into your inbox. But when someone you know\u2014someone you work with\u2014takes the time to communicate with you, acknowledge it.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Because no response is still a response. And whether you realize it or not, people are paying attention.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Silence Is Still Communication When did it become acceptable to simply not respond?
