What makes your average strategy initiative drag on is its errant focus on consensus over clarity. It turns into a tedious discovery process that attempts to satisfy everyone. However, most leadership teams already know more about their business than they think. The real challenge in creating a strategy isn’t discovery, it’s deciding. An effective process creates focus, forces tradeoffs, and ends with decisions people can actually use.

How you get there hardly matters. It’s not the format that makes a successful strategy, it’s whether the answers you come out with are clear enough to guide decision-making, specific enough to say “no” to, and understood enough to be used by leadership. If your mission, vision and values don’t change how people behave, they aren’t finished.

The BOSS system takes an agile approach to strategy. It isn’t rushed or shallow, just disciplined and focused. The goal is simple: get leadership aligned on the core answers in one focused day, then move forward. That means no endless wordsmithing, no theoretical debates, and no punting on decisions to “revisit later.” Instead, the process unearths what matters most, forces real choices and tradeoffs, and gives leadership tangible outputs that they can implement into their business right away.

Strategy is not a magnum opus, it’s a tool, and the sooner you can use it the better.
