Strategy, accountability, metrics, cadence, decision-making\u2014nothing exotic. Just the basics.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>Here\u2019s the hard truth: most small businesses score pretty low on that first pass. That usually changes after we implement a clear Business Strategy and Operating System, but the starting point is often sobering.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><span>Recently, I had the opportunity to deliver a business operations session where the \u201cstudents\u201d included leaders from much larger organizations. Not surprisingly, those companies scored significantly higher on the same assessment. That wasn\u2019t because they were smarter or more passionate. It\u2019s because most successful larger firms\u2014especially in professional services\u2014have their business fundamentals locked down.<\/span><\/div><div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53021e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"53021e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Small business owner alert: this is what you are up against.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-757f283 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"757f283\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p>Big firms come with real advantages. They\u2019ve built systems. They have repeatable processes. They track performance. They also benefit from economies of scale, deeper benches, and access to capital. Private equity has only accelerated this reality by professionalizing operations and aggressively consolidating fragmented markets.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>That doesn\u2019t mean small businesses are doomed. Far from it.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>Small businesses have advantages that big firms envy: lower overhead, faster decision-making, greater agility, and fewer shareholders demanding short-term earnings at the expense of long-term health. Business discipline and great work are not mutually exclusive. In fact, a well-run business exists to support the mission\u2014not replace it.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>Private equity gets a lot of criticism, some of it deserved. When the pendulum swings too far toward financial outcomes, culture, customers, and purpose can suffer. But whether you like PE or not is irrelevant. Consolidation and scale are facts of life. Ignoring them doesn\u2019t protect you from them.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>If you want to survive\u2014and prosper\u2014as an independent small business, you have to close the fundamentals gap.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/div><div><p>That means getting serious about strategy. Installing operating discipline. Measuring what matters. Creating clarity and accountability. Not because you want to become a big firm, but because you want to stay a great small one.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><div><p>A well-run small business can absolutely compete.
